The quickest fixed-schedule way from Incheon Airport to central Seoul is the AREX Express train to Seoul Station, which takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and about 51 minutes from Terminal 2. The cheaper All-Stop train, airport buses and taxis each make more sense depending on where your hotel is, how much luggage you have and what time you land.

Key takeaways

  • AREX Express goes non-stop to Seoul Station; the official listed adult fare is about 13,000 KRW.
  • The AREX All-Stop train costs about 4,750–5,350 KRW with a transit card and stops at Hongdae and Gongdeok.
  • Airport buses go closer to many hotel areas, and taxis suit groups or late arrivals; check official pages for current fares.

AREX Express vs All-Stop

AREX (the Airport Railroad) runs two kinds of trains on the same line between the two airport terminals and Seoul Station.

Express train

  • Stops only at Terminal 2, Terminal 1 and Seoul Station.
  • Takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and about 51 minutes from Terminal 2.
  • Every passenger has a reserved seat, and there is space for luggage.
  • The official site lists the adult fare at about 13,000 KRW. You need a separate ticket, because tapping a transit card at the gate does not work for the Express.
  • Trains run roughly every half hour to 40 minutes, so check the timetable if you are landing early or late.

All-Stop train

  • Stops at every station, including Hongik University (Hongdae), Gongdeok, Digital Media City and Gimpo Airport.
  • Takes about 59 minutes from Terminal 1 and about 66 minutes from Terminal 2 to Seoul Station.
  • The official fare table lists about 4,750 KRW from Terminal 1 and about 5,350 KRW from Terminal 2 to Seoul Station with a transit card. Single-use tickets cost slightly more and need a small refundable deposit.
  • Trains are much more frequent, but there are no reserved seats, and luggage space is limited at busy times.

Both trains leave from the transportation center below each terminal. Fares and timetables change from time to time, so check airportrailroad.com shortly before you travel.

Worked example. Two adults travelling from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station:

  • Express: 13,000 × 2 = 26,000 KRW
  • All-Stop with transit cards: 4,750 × 2 = 9,500 KRW
  • Difference: 26,000 − 9,500 = 16,500 KRW, for a time saving of about 16 minutes

If your hotel is near Hongdae or Gongdeok, the All-Stop drops you there directly, while the Express would take you past it to Seoul Station and leave you to come back by subway.

Airport limousine buses

Airport buses link both terminals with many Seoul districts and large hotels. They are a good fit if you have heavy bags or your hotel is far from Seoul Station.

  • Fares on most Seoul routes are roughly 16,000–18,000 KRW one way.
  • Journey times are often 60–90 minutes and depend heavily on traffic.
  • Bags go in the hold, so you do not have to carry them through stations.
  • Buy tickets at the counters or machines in the arrivals area; some routes also accept transit cards.

Routes, stops and timetables change, and a few routes run late at night. The Incheon Airport website lists current routes by destination, which is the easiest way to find the bus number for your hotel area.

Taxis and late arrivals

Official taxi ranks are outside the arrivals hall at both terminals. As a very rough guide, a regular taxi to central Seoul often costs somewhere around 60,000–90,000 KRW including expressway tolls. The fare depends on your exact destination, traffic, the type of taxi and the time of day. Seoul taxis add late-night surcharges, roughly 20–40% depending on the hour.

International taxis with foreign-language drivers also operate from the airport, with fares set by destination zone. Book these through the channels listed on the official airport website.

Two safety rules:

  • Use the official taxi ranks only.
  • Say no to anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride.

If you land after the last trains and most buses have left, a taxi from the official rank is usually your main option.

Which option should you choose?

  • AREX Express: you want a seat and a predictable time, and your hotel is near Seoul Station.
  • AREX All-Stop: you are staying near Hongdae, Gongdeok or another AREX station, or you want the lowest fare.
  • Airport bus: you have big suitcases and a bus stops near your hotel in Myeongdong, Gangnam, Jamsil or similar areas.
  • Taxi: you are a group of three or four, you have small children, or you arrive late at night.

Common mistakes

  • Buying an Express ticket when your hotel is right next to an All-Stop station such as Hongdae.
  • Trying to tap a transit card at the Express gate instead of buying a ticket.
  • Accepting a ride from someone who approaches you inside the terminal.
  • Landing late without checking last train and bus times, and having no backup plan.
